FAQ

At Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services, we've done our best to create a web site that anticipates and satisfies our customers' needs. With that goal in mind, we've compiled a list of frequently asked questions. We are continually adding to our FAQ, so be sure to check back often!

Q: If a social worker or family member knowing sign language is present with a client at a doctor's appointment, can they interpret?

A: No. First of all, just because someone knows sign language enough to communicate their own thoughts with a person does not mean that s/he is qualified to be an interpreter.  Interpreters have passed a test to show their skill level and will have a card to show that they are either RID certified or have a State of Michigan Quality Assurance.

Secondly, the code of conduct for interpreters requires impartiality.  It is not possible for a social worker or a family member to simultaneously advocate for the client and interpret information and remain impartial that way.  If a family member is interpreting, that family member cannot advise and consult with his family member like he would when he is not interpreting.

Thirdly, family members are emotionally involved with the patient and because of that, they need the space to be family members.

Q: Can I just stop by at DeafHHS to meet with the staff?

A: Because of many people coming to DeafHHS, it is a good idea to make an appointment.  With an appointment, our staff will have time to sit down and visit with you one on one without being interrupted.  Often our staff have meetings already planned.

Q: I am hard of hearing and need assistive equipment.  Is there any way that DeafHHS can help?

A: Yes - DeafHHS has a variety of equipment.  We have amplified phones, flashing smoke detectors, vibrating and flashing lights for alarm clocks, flashing lights for when the phone rings or someone is at the door.  Our hard of hearing specialist can help you find the right item to purchase or loan.

Q: I am hard of hearing and need to buy a hearing aid.  They are so expensive.  Is there any help for me to purchase a hearing aid.

A: Yes, there is some help available.  When you call us, or some to talk to us, we can find some ways to get some help for you.
